Patina’s Poetry Launch: Bringing Community, Culture, and Literacy to Life

Joining the community for the launch of Patina’s Poetry at Save Hall Green Library was a wonderful experience, both personally and for everyone at Learn with Lolonyo.

We are deeply grateful to Rukhsana for the invitation and for giving us the opportunity to share excerpts from my debut poetry book with the local community. Connecting with young readers and their families and celebrating culturally rich poetry felt incredibly meaningful.

Seeing the children so engaged and responsive to questions was truly heartwarming. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was wonderful to see them so captivated by stories that reflected their own experiences. Parents were equally involved, and witnessing their children’s engagement firsthand brought them immense pride. Many expressed how rewarding it was to see the benefits of using literature to captivate and educate young minds, reinforcing their belief in the importance of storytelling for children’s development.

This event, however, held even greater significance. It provided a vital platform to raise awareness about the potential closure of Save Hall Green Library, an essential community resource. Libraries like these have played a pivotal role in my life, not only in my own childhood but also in the lives of my daughters. They have been fundamental to their learning journeys, offering a safe and inspiring environment for exploration and discovery.

Having spent over 30 years in early education and as a former Ofsted inspector, I cannot emphasise enough the importance of ensuring that all children have access to physical spaces like libraries. They are far more than just places to borrow books; they are hubs of imagination, learning, and community support. Libraries nurture curiosity and provide access to resources that many children and families wouldn’t otherwise have.

It was a privilege to stand with the community in support of preserving this invaluable resource. Together, let us continue to advocate for these cherished institutions, safeguarding them for future generations. After all, libraries are not just about books, they’re about nurturing our shared future, one reader at a time.
